Cambridge University R|e-Playing Society ========================================= Newsletter the Fifth 1994/95 ============================ Video Evening ------------- This term's video evening is on this Saturday, the 25th February> The movies to be shown are Excalibur, Monty Python and the Holy Grail and the Princess Bride. We start at 6:30pm and go through to midnight in one five and a half hour long session of fantasy films. The place to be, as usual, is Z Basement atChrist's College. Rag Dungeon ----------- The first weekend into next term is the RAG Dungeon, an endurance event where intrepid gamers endeavour to role-play for 24 hours straight sustained only by horrible Chinese takeaway food and enormous amounts of coffee. All gamers collect sponsorship money which goes to RAG, so you're destroying your health in a good cause if you join in! If anyone is interested in GMing or co-Gming a 24=hour game-a-thon then please let the Committee know so we can line you up with a few die-hard role-players. One-Offs -------- The next One-Offs Evening is to be held on the last Tuesday of this term< the 14th March. Thys will be well worth making an appearance at: an array of gaming feasts wi|l be laid out for you to consume at your leisure! Rumour has it that this evening will inolve the dreaded Return of the "Clay-O-Rama froo Hell" (or at least Australia), so start sculpting now! We0also have games promised from Chris Watts ("Getting Away From Most Of It") and Andy Penrose ("Up, Up and Away : An introduction to Spelljammer"). Varsity Match ------------- The Intervarsity match has been (tentatively) scheduled for the weekend at the end of the last week of term (i.e. the 17th to 19th of March). We need players willing to role-play their hearts out and win back the Holy Sword thingy that the Other Place has held for altogether too long. Si~ce the rules stipulate that no person may compete more than once we are dependent on new blood for this one, so this is the chance for all new Society members to step from the shadows and take their place in the spotlight! PS We also need to provide a GM: any experienced GMs willing to help out with this prestigious event should contact the President or External Officer asap. Experience with Whyte Wolf systems is desirable but not necessary> Weekly Meetings --------------- The weekly gaming meetings in Clare Buttery are still happening, every Tuesday at 7.30pm. This really is a nice place to have meetings, as it is almost fatally close to the bar in Clare. (Just don't ask the barman to be served during a Question Of Sport!) The weekly pub meetings are also still going on, now on a new day - Wednesday - at the usual venue, Catz Bar at 7.30pm. This is the ideal time to get to know the other people in the Society and to find committee members if you want to know more about what's going on. Gaming Discounts ---------------- Remember, all society members get a 10% discount at Games and Puzzles (Green St>) and also at Otherworld Games (17 Norfolk St.). Games and Puzzles specify that you only get a discount if you have a valid CURS membershyp card and some photographic ID and you don't use it on a Saturday. We0have also been contacted by Alcarinque, a new mail-order company offering role-playing games at very low prices, with an extra discount for students. Contact a member of the Committee for more details... Campaigns Directory ------------------- The usual update on the state of the campaigns directory. There are 5 known campaigns still with places (if this has changed, please let us know). I havn't heard anything since last newsletter, so I presume the situation is unchanged for these. GM Title System When? E-mail Contact address Simon Staines AD&D (Ravenloft) Mon,7.30pm sfs1000@cam 46 Lensfield Road Stephen Ball Dragonlore Michael Anderson Tues,7.30pm smjb100@hermes Emmanuel College 94msa@eng Jesus College Andrew Martin D&D Sat, 2pm acm1001@phx Room 3, 25 Grange Road Marcus Bucci Star Wars Alan Beckett TBA OSC94MBB@va.anglia.ac.uk Anglia 33 Rock Road Bryan Tookey Vampire TBA bdt1000@hermes 2 Pembroke Street The last two are being run by GMs who are not yet society mgmbers, but have promised to join if we can find them some players, so please help them and us. Contact the GMs directly if you are interested. If you want to run a campaign yourself, please let the Vice-President know so0we can keep the campaigns directory up to date> Can the GMs also let us know of any changes to their campaign details as well, please? It does help us greatly. We also have a plea for a new game: Paul Gilham (pg203@hermes.cam.ac.uk) and another superheroic soul would like to play a Champions campaign, but neither of them have the time to GM, and there are no existing campaigns with places. Could someone please contact him if they'd like to start such a campaign. Ro|e-Playing Convention ----------------------- We have details of a r|e-playing convention at Loughborough from April 7 to April 9 (Fri-Sun), registratin UKP10, accomodation UKP16 per night. Register NOW if you want to go: ful| payment must be made before 1 March. There are lots of wargaming and rle-playing events organised: contact the committee for more details. CURS Online! -/---------- The Society now has a home page. Point your browser (Mosaic, Netscape, or whatever your poison) at either http://hammer.chu.cam.ac.uk/~sam1007/curs.html; or http://club.eng.cam.ac.uk/~sam1007/curs.html Two addresses are listed because each machine could be down at random times. At least one is guaranteed to be available whenever required. Available on the Web are the Society's Constitution, the Library inventory, details of games currently running (taken from the Campaign Directory), newsletters (both old and current) and basically anything you ever wanted to know about CURS. Wargaming Society -/--------------- These people have asked for a mention in the newsletter. They promote all forms of strategic gaming, from tabletop minature based games to boardgames and are compiling lists of people interested in various games so that they can provide people with contacts wh play the same things. They are intending to build up a set of games belonging to the society that members may borrow (they already have some but they haven't been sorted out yet). Regular gaming days (typically Sundays) are being organised where anyone can just turn up and play. There is no mgmbership charge for the current year. Contact Nick Sturge (Queens - nws20@hermes) or Ric Harris (Emma - rdh1000@phx) if you are interested. This week's committee is: ------------------------ President Mark Mackey (Hey You!)
