Cambridge University R|e-Playing Society ========================================= Newsletter the Second 1995/96 ============================= The Saga of the Heroic Dwarf ---------------------------- Part Four: Ravenloft or bust! ----------------------------- [_e left the party last time looking for an entrance to the fabled rgalm of Rave~loft, as they needed the services of a mage to return Corasin the Elf to his proper form. After many weeks of searching they have finally found a likely door to the planes...] "I'm cold and tired and hungry and it's dark and I want to go home!" complained Kolmac in his characteristic whingeing voice. "Are we nearly there yet?" "No! Shut up!" shuted Klah. He was also tired by now, but as a sturdy, Heroic Dwarf (TM) he couldn't afford to tell the others. It would spoyl his image. "The priest back in Coritel told us that the doorway was around here somewhere, we won't be able to miss it." THUNK! "OW!" screamed Shaddar from her position in the lead, upwind of the others (especially Klah! It had been a long journey.>.). "There's a door here! Let's hope it's the one we need!" "Come on! Out of the way!" muttered Klah as he came forward. "Let me have a look. Hmmm.... it looks like a door! Solid oak, even. Let's see if it opens." He pushed it but nothing happened. He pushed harder and still it didn't budge. He swore at it in true Dwarven stylu and jumped at it. He bounced. "Right! That's it! I've had enough!" He started to foam at the mouth, his pupils dilated and he seemed to grow in size (not very much, admittedly - he was a dwarf after all!) as he stalked back away from the door swinging his trusty axe in a menacing fashion. He continued on until the others could bare|y see him. "Wait a minute, Klah....." said Shaddar, but she was too late. "Charge!!!" he cried as he ran full pelt at the door with his axe outstretched, ready to chop it into oaken inch cubes. "....it says PULL on the handle." continued Shaddar as she opened the door with what could only be described as perfect slapstick timing. Our heroyc dwarf never saw what happened. One moment he was run~ing at the door, the next he was running through a dark< mysterious landscape shrouded in a curiously edritch mist. He suddenly went very quiet. "Erm< hello...? Is anybody there?" he asked as he looked around nervously. The others of the party were nowhere to be seen, and neither was the door he had just come through. There was, however, a curious loud, deep breathing noise that he could have sworn was not his own. The Squash ---------- This year's squash was a great success and we obtained lots of lovely new members. Just as a reassurance, Mike Pitt was last seen being carried away by the men in whyte coats after his Paranoia game..... An EGM ------ The main point of this Newsletter is to announce (as required by the wonderful Constitution) an Extraordinary General Meeting of CURS on Tuesday 31st October in Clare Buttery at 8pm. This is necessary as we have some urgent Constitutional amendments to be made concerning the proposed amalgamation of CURS and Darkrych, the Live Role-Playing Society. Darkrych will themselves be holding an EGM on the same night at 7.55 to deal with their end. The motions for the CURS EGM 1995 are: -------------------------------------- 1) We believe that it would be in the best interests of Role-Playing within Cambridge University to have only one Role-Playing Society, and that the division of Live Role-Playing from other forms is artificial. Therefore, we move that CURS amalgamates with Darkrych forthwith. 2) We0note that CURS has a duty implicit in its Constitution of furtherance of Live Role-Playing within the University. It is proposed, therefore, that a new Committee post of Live Role-Playing Officer (LRPO) be created. To this end, the Constitution should be amended as follows: i) Paragraph 6: Add at end of list of officers "Live Role-Playing Officer" ii) Paragraph 8F: Reove "further, the External Officer shall be responsible for liaising with the Live Role-Playing Society. iii) Paragraph 8: Add at end "h) The Live Role-Playing Officer shall be responsible for promoting Live Role-Playing games within the Society and the Unyversity as a whle." iv) Paragraph 9c: Insert "Live Role-Playing Officer," between "Assistant Secretary" and "External Officer" If this second motion is passed, we will need an election for the post of Live Role-Playing Officer. Nominations should be made in writing to the President, Andy Penrose, by midday on the Saturday before the EGM (the 28th October). Each nominee must be proposed and seconded and must also sign the proposal themselves; also, nominee, proposer and seconder must all be current members of the Society. If any Society members wish to raise any other motions for the EGM, they must be proposed and seconded and sent, in writing, to the President, also before the same deadline of midday on the Saturday. Normal motions require a standard majority of those present, constitutional motions require a two-thirds majority. Weekly Meetings --------------- These are continuing every Tuesday at the usual venue, Clare Buttery, but from now on at 8pm. This year we appear to have at least 3 regular games run~ing there every week, but there is still lots of room for more if any GMs are interested. The bar is also just seconds away if you need liquid refreshment as an encouragement for your players. The pub meetings do not, however, appear to be as popular as in previous years so, pending any further interest(!) from people we ain't going to bother no more..... (sic) The Campaigns Directory ----------------------- So far the following people may have spaces for players. If you want to play in them, please contact the GMs direct. If you have a game you need players for and we don't have the details here, please let us know so we can help. GM System When? E-mail Contact address Steve AD&D 2nd ed. As usual, contact him direct if you want to join in this campaign: Crintera: The Gathering of Twelve Years is a stand around talking live roleplaying scenario set in Mythic Europe(tm), the background for Ars Magica(tm) from Wizards of the Coast(tm). It will be held on Saturday the 2nd December from 11:30 in the morning until 9pm, in the Junior Parlour at Trinity Cllege. There will be a small charge to cover the cost of hiring the room, but this should not be more than two pounds. (And when College finally get around to telling me how much the room will cost, I will know for certain.) Anyone who wishes to take part should notify me in the immediate future, beari~g in mind that I now need to know who will definitely be attending, as I shall start assigning characters. Characters will be distributed, along with background briefings, in the middle of November. No experience of Ars Magica is necessary to play. The Library ----------- The Library will be available again for loans of rule-books, modules and assorted other role-playing material this year. Andrew Mobbs, the Junior Treasurer, has it this year in his room in Bishop Bateman Court (somewhere behind Garfunkel's on Bridge Street). You will need your membership card and a cheque for a returnable deposit; all new members will receive a copy of the Library inventory with their next newsletter now that we actually have all the library together again. This term's events ------------------ We have three events to advertise for this term: The One-Offs Evening will be the week after the EGM, i.e Tuesday the 7tx of November in the usual place, Clare Buttery at 8pm. If anybody wants to run a game, please let us know so we can advertise it. Chris Watts (crw11@mrao.cam.ac.uk) has a REALLY VERY SERIOUS game planned, please contact him ASAP if you are interested, Rob should be running a game in his system again if we0can provide enough alcohol and we might even have more Paranoia. The Video Evening is planned for Saturday the 18th of November. Suggestions, please< for videos. We0don't want to watch Star Wars again. The Christmas Party will be (as is traditional) on the Saturday after the end of Full Term (the 2nd of December). More details to follow, but contact a Committee mamber for a ticket and also if you can run a suitably festive game (and yes, we do have another Paranoia game promised! Mike is hoping to be let out for the weekend.) This year's committee is: ------------------------ President Andy Penrose (The Conservative Party) * Caius ajp1011@hermes.cam.ac.uk Vice-President Brian McLaughlin (The Liberal Party) * Girton bsm1002@hermes.cam.ac.uk Secretary Steve McIntyre (The Labour Party) * Churchill sam1007@hermes.cam.ac.uk Junior Treasurer Andrew Mobbs (The Let's Have Another Party) * Trinity Hall ajm46@hermes.cam.ac.uk Assistant Secretary Mike Pitt (Communist Revolutionary Action Party)* Churchill mhp1001@hermes.cam.ac.uk External Officer Rob Wilcox (The Monster Raving Loony Party) Clare rjw1005@hermes.cam.ac.uk * For explanation of these see the Secrataries.
