Cambridge University R|e-Playing Society ========================================= Newsletter the Fourth 1995/96 CNN News: Gondor, the real story after the war... ================================================= Sam: "And now we go to Bob, live from Minas Tirith, Gondor. Bob, how is the war for Middle Earth going?" Bob: "Well Sam, last night we thought that the war with Mordor was going to be Gondor's Vietnam and it has to be said that things didn't look too good for a while, but with the destructin of the Great Ring of Power I can only say that things have worked out OK." Sam: "And what of the new Elvish-Dwarf peace accord?" Bob: "Less positive there, I'm afraid Sam. The meeting broke up last night with mutual racial insults on both sides. Legolas, the spokesperson for the Elven race here in Gondor, continues to claim that, as the elder race of the world, the elves have rights to all territories in Middle Earth, and said that it was impossible to allow traditionally Elvish lands, such as Moria, and the Blue Mountains, to be reoccupied by Dwarven 'terrorists'. Gimli gave a press conference this morning, saying that the Elvish delegates, such as Galadriel, were merely a smokescreen for more sinister Elvish plans to reduce the Dwarven race to the status of blacksmyths and shoeshiners. He intends to open a display of Dwarven culture later today." Sam: "And I understand that Strider will be chairing an Allied Peace Forum tonight?" Bob: "Yes indeed Sam. Strider, now calling himself King Aragorn II, is of course under some pressure to allow a Grand Jury to cross-examine Gandalf on what is now being labelled 'Denethor-gate'. Gandalf continues to claim he had nothing to do with the madness and suicide of the Chief Steward, and says that he had full legal powers to take over the government of Gondor during the invasion. Aragorn claims to have been riding through the Passages of the Dead at the time of the 'suicide', though he may be questioned closely as to his claims to be the descendant of the lost-lost Kings of Gondor. A sword-smith who claims to have manufactured a broken sword for Strider, as he was then called two years ago, may give evidence on this matter. "More generally, with the Tree of Gondor still dead and the Gondorian war industry looking out of place in the new world order, morale may well drop after the end of the victory celebrations. The environmental cost of several centuries of Sauron's rule in Mordor could well reach into the millions. Mount Doom continues to belch black smoke, and there is a massive Ring-making capability still to be dealt with, amidst fears that it could fall, yet again, into wro~g hands." Sam: "And lastly, Bob, what of those plucky little hobbits who so timely defeated Sauron, master of all evil?" Bob: "They're doing fine at the moment Sam, although there are concerns over the condition of the Shire. Several tons of 'Hobbit-Town Black' pipeweed was seized in the remains of Saruman's tower, and there are fears that the drug cartels have moved into the Shire during the war. It remains to be seen if the rural economy of Hobbit Town can survive in the post-war climate of free trade. But for now at least, the hobbits are celebrating." Sam: "Thank you Bob in Minas Tirith. I'm sure the viewers at home will join me in wishing you a good night's celebrations. and now on to the issue of the recent scandals in the Unseen University.>."
